Activity Descriptions and Volunteer Opportunities

Elementary/Middle School Meet the Teacher (AUGUST); The Meet the Teacher is sponsored by the school.  However, the LNS PTO Membership Committee also has a table to sign up new members for the PTO and to sign up parents to adopt teachers (to pay for their lunch during open house).   Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to help with setup/breakdown and to help sign up new members.  Contact: r[email protected]  


Back to School Teacher Breakfast (AUGUST);  New Parent Meet & Greet (SEPTEMBER); Kindergarten Roundup (APRIL); and 6th Grade Orientation (APRIL):  During all of these events, the PTO President(s) are asked to speak on behalf of the PTO.  They can tell the parents about the pto and the things that the PTO does around the school.  They can give the information about volunteering and joining the PTO. The Kindergarten Roundup and 6th Grade Orientation are sponsored by the school for districted kids in those grades.  The Back to School Teacher Celebration is attended by teachers and staff at the school. In addition to speaking, the PTO sponsors a breakfast and raffle/door prizes for the teachers. This is also an opportunity to give Teachers the opportunity to become PTO members..  The New Parent Meet & Greet is an opportunity for new parents to ask questions to parents and to members of the PTO about the school, area, activities, processes, or whatever they would like to talk about. The PTO provides light refreshments and invites the administration to participate in this roundtable discussion.  Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to help with setup/breakdown, prizes/refreshments when necessary and with advertisement for the New Parent Meet & Greet only. Boo Hoo/Yahoo Breakfast (AUGUST):  The Boo Hoo/Yahoo Breakfast is a breakfast for parents on the first day of school.  As we send our kids off for the new school, some of us are teary eyed and blue and others are sending their kids off as they cheer yahoo – quite  loving the fact that the summers are finally through!! No matter the case, the Boo Hoo/Yahoo Breakfast gives all the parents an opportunity to share their feelings and thoughts with other parents, enjoy a muffin, coffee and a smile while hearing about  plans for the new year at the first PTO general meeting of the new school year. This is also an opportunity for the membership committee to sign up new members for the PTO. The Event Coordinator(s) orders muffins/coffee, advertise the event around the school, decorates the venue, prepares handouts and speakers for the events and is in charge of setup and breakdown.   Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to help make table decorations, bringing food, setup and break down the venue for the event. Boo Bingo (OCTOBER):  This fun family event will take place on Thursday, October 27th (No School on Friday).  The Boo Bingo Volunteer Chairperson(s) will coordinate volunteers, set up, pizza/food vendor, bingo prizes, decorations. A flyer will be created/distributed for the event and posted in the E-Newsletter for parents to print and fill out their pizza order, attendance and money that should be sent in. Volunteer Opportunities:  We need help setting up/decorating after school, distributing bingo cards at the event, helping to serve dinner and with prizes. Contact:  [email protected]


Book Fairs (SEPTEMBER & MAY):  Volunteer chairperson(s) coordinate two Scholastic book fairs each year, held in the fall and spring, and will coordinate volunteers. Proceeds are used to purchase books for the Library and teacher classroom libraries.  Volunteer Opportunities:  We need volunteers to set up and break down the book fair, to sell books during the fair and volunteers to help students shop during their library time. Box Tops For Education (OCTOBER): Box Tops for Education® is one of the nation’s largest school earnings loyalty programs and has been helping schools succeed since 1996. With over 250 participating products, it’s an easy way for schools to earn cash for the things they need. Families can clip box tops from products or earn them while shopping online. Volunteer Opportunities:  A volunteer chairperson(s) will recruit and assist volunteers with the communications (E-Newsletter), collection, count, bundle and submission of box tops for merchandise redemption. Chairperson will also coordinate prizes/celebration for winning classrooms. Contact:  [email protected]


Business Partners:  The LNS Business Partners help to support the school by donating cash, goods or service to LNS.  In turn they gain valuable visibility to the LNS families and benefit education and the community-at-large by enriching the curriculum, ensuring the quality of education necessary for economic growth, strengthening the future workforce, and/or increasing support for and confidence in public education throughout the community.  Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers help to identify business that want to be a part of the program, give them the business partner package and collect the donations. In addition, volunteers help with thank you activities geared toward business partners.  Contact:  [email protected]


Clothes Closet:   Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteer Coordinator(s) shelp secure items that families may need in the school via the Clothes Closet.  They coordinate parent volunteers to help in the clothes closet and submit notices about the clothes closet needs via the LNS Constant Contact Newsletter, flyers and letters to sponsors.  In addition, the Clothes Closet Coordinator will get notices when a student needs clothes from the Clothes Closet, respond by assisting students and or parents while in the Clothes Closet and may sponsor a Clothes Closet Open House for teachers and administration in the fall.  Contact:  [email protected]


Communications:  The Vice President of Communications creates and distributes Newsletter Sign Up Forms and creates the school’s monthly Constant Contact Newsletter.  In addition, special editions are created on an as needed basis. All newsletters must be approved by Vice Principal Christine Oliver or Tricia Card before they are sent out.  The VP of Communications also makes sure that copies of the newsletter are sent to the school’s technology support staff for posting on the web site, the calendar at a glance is shared with the school’s front office staff and the Constant Contact Database is updated.  Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers are need to enter new names in the Constant Contact database, to write articles for the newsletter and to send out the Constant contact newsletter each month.  Contact:  [email protected]


Daddy Daughter Dance (JANUARY): Fathers and daughters can come enjoy some music, crafts and refreshments in a fun atmosphere. Volunteer Opportunities:  The Volunteer Chairperson(s) will be responsible for advertising, selling tickets, coordination of food and entertainment for the event. In addition, the Chairperson will find volunteers to help with decorations and on the day of the event.  Contact:  [email protected]


Elementary/Middle School Open House (SEPTEMBER):  On the Elementary School Open House Night the LNS PTO sponsors a Dinner for families and teachers, a parking space auction and a membership drive.  The Auction is by sealed bid (the highest bidders win), bids are handed in at the front office and handled by the LNS Membership Committee. The Middle School teachers are treated to a dinner on Middle School Open House Night.  The Activity Chair is in charge of sending out ordering forms to the teachers and all the students, sending out the adopt a teacher forms, ordering the meal, setup coordination, ordering and distributing meal ticket. The Membership drive is handled by the Membership Committee.   Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to help decorate on the day of the event (2-3), to collect meal tickets(2) and to help in the cafeteria (3-4).  Contact:  [email protected]


Fall Festival (OCTOBER): Our annual Fall Festival will take place on Friday, October 6TH.  This is an extremely fun fall event that helps the teachers raise money for classroom projects.  100% of the proceeds go directly to the teachers running the booths. Volunteer opportunities:  Each teacher needs their parents support to make this event happen!!  Please talk with your child’s teacher to help them plan a booth. Fall Fundraiser (SEPTEMBER):  LNS will be trying Otis Spunkmeyer cookies and pies for our Fall Fundraising event.  Volunteer opportunities:  We need help labeling and delivering the catalogs to the classrooms the first week in September, Collecting and counting the orders on September 26 and to setting up the cafeteria for distribution and distribution of the the items to the students.  May also need help with the Fall Fundraiser Winner Parties. Fun Fridays/Terrific Tuesday:   LNS PTO sponsors themes to build community spirit.  Volunteer chairperson(s) will plan and advertise fun activities for Fun Fridays or Terrific Tuesdays..  Examples of activities are Hat Day, Snow Cone Day, etc.  Volunteer Opportunities:  Make and distribute flyers, sale items, distribute tickets,  judge contest, make popcorn, help with the Lollipopawinza activity, etc. Contact:  [email protected]


Holiday Gift Shop (DECEMBER):  Our Holiday Gift Shop provides an opportunity for students to purchase gifts for family members at an extremely reduced rate.  The shop is open in the PTO portable from . Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to work in the shop for ½ day shifts during the entire week, set-up & shopping and assisting students while they shop.  Contact:  [email protected]  or [email protected]m


Middle School Events:  The LNS PTO assist the LNS Student Council with Middle School Events.  The PTO is only responsible for assisting by finding volunteers. Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to decorate, chaperone and help with day of event logistics for Middle School events.  Contact:  [email protected] or [email protected]


Mom Son Date Night (MARCH):  The boys are growing fast so there is no time to spare, we like to take them bowling and we want you there.  The LNS Mom Son Date Night offers music, activities, pizza, prizes, and a chance for parents and kids to bond while bowling or while doing some other activity.  Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to create and distribute flyers, collect money/tickets, decorate, pass out food and prizes.  Contact:  [email protected]

Movie Night & Auction (NOVEMBER):  A family movie under the stars put on by the Sarasota Film Festival.  We serve cotton candy, popcorn, sodas and have a activities such as music by school bands, silent auction and a “Box Car Competition”.  Volunteer Opportunities:  We need help procuring silent auction items (including gift certificates, gift cards and gift baskets), manning the different service stations and advertising the event.  Contact:  [email protected]


Muffins With Mom (MAY):  The LNS Administration sponsors Donuts for Dads and orders the Donuts for that event.  The PTO only helps find volunteers for the day of the Donuts for Dads event to help with setup and donut distribution.  The LNS PTO sponsors Muffins with moms and orders muffins, juice, coffee, water and flowers for the events. Volunteer opportunities:  Volunteers help with preparing trays of muffins, decorating, passing out muffins, beverages and flowers.  In addition, volunteers also help with setting up and breaking down tables and chairs for the event and clean up.  Contact:  [email protected]


Restaurant Nights:  Restaurant Nights are school fundraisers like the family nights at McDonalds, Chick-fil-a and Dairy Queen.  A PTO Coordinator identifies these fundraising opportunities, communicates with the restaurants and plans the fundraiser, schedules the day at the school, coordinates advertisement/volunteers and follows up with the school to ensure the they receive payment from the efforts.  Volunteer Opportunities:  Volunteers are needed to help with advertisement.  Contact:  [email protected]


Run-A-Thon:  Run with ust! During this event, our elementary students will have an opportunity to run laps on the track while being cheered on by family and friends!   100% of the pledge money raised by our students goes directly to our school PTO. Volunteer opportunities:  Running a station on the day of event: smoothie table, fruit stand, parent sign-in, lap counter, collection site, water table and sponsor’s tent.  Also need assistance with t-shirt distribution day, awarding prizes, assisting with reward parties. Spirit Apparel Coordinator: Volunteer chairperson needed to work with a vendor to create LNS themed items for sale. Chairperson advertises the sale, distributes and collects order forms and gather money and disperse items when delivered.  Contact:  [email protected]


Staff Appreciation Luncheon & Week (NOVEMBER 8; MAY 3rd and WEEK):  Volunteer Chairperson(s) work with volunteers to coordinate a potluck luncheon for the teachers and staff at LNS in the fall and spring.  One of the volunteer chairpersons, works with Mrs. Oliver to identify and collect prizes and gifts for the teachers, coordinate staff appreciation week activities, volunteers and decorations.  This is our way of saying thank you to the staff for all their hard work during the year.  Volunteer opportunities:  The Volunteer chairpeople  will coordinate the volunteers, send out flyers asking for donations, maintain a list of donations and decorate for the event.  In addition, the volunteers set out the food during the event and clean up after the event is done. We also need volunteers to donate Gift cards and Gift Certificates for prizes and gifts for the Back to School Teacher Breakfast.  Contact:  [email protected] and [email protected]

Thank You Gifts:   There are so many people that do a lot of things to help and who make it possible for the PTO to do all the things that we do.  We like to give them tokens of appreciation. This includes the custodians, Front Office Staff, Crossing Guards, Activity Chairs, Administration, etc.  The coordinator secures and gives gifts to them on behalf of the PTO.
